How to Write a Term paper – Subtopic Organization and Research Question

Term papers can be written for college in a variety of ways. Most often, term papers are used to help a student earn an academic grade by presenting him or her with an assignment that requires an exhaustive examination of the information they have gathered throughout the course of the semester. This task is usually in the form of an essay that defines the central idea of the paper and then arranges it into a number of paragraphs related to the topic.

A term paper is a paper that students at undergraduate level write about a specific academic term. It is usually for a major course. It outlines the student’s performance throughout the course. Merriam Webster defines it as the “term or paper, made of small items that express an idea or argument with respect to a current issue, or some other information that the writer considers important for understanding.” In this instance the essay will be much like any other assignment; the only difference is the format. All information provided will be related to one term only and the conclusion will be the “conclusion” of that particular term. Each paragraph will contain the main idea and the argument within it which will be followed by the conclusion.

Generally the term papers are easier to write than other types of academic writing because of the tiny amount of information required to support each point. That being said there is no substitute for reliable, solid sources. If a student opts to use only one primary source throughout the paper, they should be sure to cite the source in a specific manner. Otherwise, any and all information presented could be viewed as just an opinion that isn’t a valid reason to be used in the writing.

Writing term papers often requires the use of different secondary sources that can enhance the main idea of the paper. It is important to note that not all of these sources can be considered primary sources. Primary sources, such as magazines, books, or the Internet are trustworthy because they were written by individuals who are involved in the research that is being conducted and often provide relevant previous research. Secondary sources should be relevant to the research that is discussed within the paper. This includes previously published work (e.g.research published in literary reviews, scholarly databases, encyclopedias and online sites) personal experiences (e.g.first-hand experiences with a particular word) or research based on previously proven facts (e.g.research in the field of demographics on populations targeted for research).

The second portion of the term paper format is the use of different types of languages (abbreviated as MLA, APA, Chicago, Harvard, etc.) to describe the research that was conducted. For research methodology, it’s best to stick with research methods that have been established in scientific communities. However, it might be necessary to add information provided with secondary sources to explain the research methods employed in the specific research paper.

The third section of the paper contains the main topic sentences. These topic sentences outline what the entire paper is about, why it is written, what research shows and what the findings are. This section might contain references that back the primary idea of the paper. The majority of papers will choose to not include references in this section. Instead, they discuss the research methods as well as discuss the main idea of the paper, and then conclude with a paragraph summarizing the main points and the author (or the organization they represent). It is important to remember that some of these main topic sentences may be required to satisfy submission requirements for certain degree programs.
